New approaches to non-destructive evaluation of materials using air-coupled ultrasound

چکیده
The results of NDE and material characterization with mode conversion of air-coupled ultrasound into plate and surface waves in solids are reported. Singleand both-sided configurations of efficient slanted wave conversion are developed and tested for various materials. An alternative option is based on the excitation of cylindrical plate and surface waves by a focused air-coupled beam incident on a specimen surface. New opportunities of the mode conversion approach are demonstrated in remote mapping of elastic anisotropy, profilometry of thickness, ultrasonic imaging, linear and nonlinear NDE of defects and damage.

Application of air – coupled ultrasonic technique for sizing of delamination type defect in multilayered materials
Ultrasonic testing using couplants is most popular technique for non destructive testing of solid materials. In the most non – destructive evaluation tasks such as investigation of materials whose properties may be changed by liquid contact this technique can not be used. Use of contact technique can be restricted for complex geometry structures. Also, liquid couplants cannot be used when mater...
متن کاملInvestigation of Accurate Imaging of the Defects in Composite Materials Using Ultrasonic Air-coupled Technique
The modern aircrafts are built using various composite materials such as carbon/glass fibre reinforced plastics, GLARE and honeycombs. Manufacturing technologies of composite materials are complicated and include many stages. Small deviations from the technology parameters may cause relatively small defects, but influence of these defects on a total strength of a construction may be essential. ...
متن کاملBonding Defect Imaging in Glulam with Novel Air-Coupled Ultrasound Testing
The objective of this chapter is to provide an overview of novel non-destructive testing methodologies for bonding quality assessment in glued laminated timber developed within a recently completed Swiss National Science Foundation research project (Sanabria, 2012). The focus is set on air-coupled ultrasound testing, which has previously been applied to wood-based panels typically up to 50 mm t...
متن کاملPortable and Hybrid Laser Generation / Air-coupled Detection System for Non Destructive Inspection
This review presents a portable head instrument, using a hybrid laser generation/aircoupled detection system for ultrasonic non-destructive inspection. The equipment is made of a low-cost Nd:YAG pulsed laser linked to a multimode optic fiber to generate Surface Acoustic Waves (SAW). Instead of a long-pulse detection laser coupled to an interferometer, a small aircoupled ultrasonic transducer is...
متن کاملDesign, Evaluation and Prototyping of a New Robotic Mechanism for Ultrasound Imaging
This paper presents a new robotic mechanism for ultrasound imaging. The device is placed on a patient's body by an operator, and an ultrasound expert controls the motions of the device to obtain ultrasound images. The paper focuses on the robotic mechanism that performs ultrasound imaging. The design of the mechanism is based on two approaches to produce center of motion for an ultrasound probe...
